Getting tired of low tension -- ideas?

Sign in to disble this ad
My electric bass is presently strung with TI Jazz Flats. It is a cheap passive Ibanez "TR Series" with PJ pickup set, that I de-fretted. The bass is just so easy and comfortable to play that I can't imagine getting something different. For anything to hang around my neck for 4 hours, it has to be comfortable and lightweight.

But I am realizing that the low tension of the TI flats is not a blessing in my case. I am mainly an upright player. By force of habit, I dig in pretty hard, to the point of causing distortion in the pickups. Yes I checked to make sure it isn't really distortion in the amp.

So I could handle a higher tension string. GHS Bright Flats sounded good, but they have that rough surface that takes a long time to get smooth with playing. Something that feels like my upright strings (TI Spirocore Mittel) would be ideal.

Ideas? Yeah, I could change my technique, but I am an old man.

GHS precision Flats smooth from ther getgo and not sticky like TI's can be. Higher tension but not high tension and comfortable to play.

Thanks. I had no idea the precision flats were still available, since I have never seen them in stores. They were on my aluminum neck Kramer fretless when I got it in 1981. I found a set at Just Strings, and will give them a try.

If you like Spirocores, I'd say get Fenders or LaBellas. I use TI Superflexibles, which are kind of similar to Mittels, and definitely comparable to Fenders and LaBellas. I think they're made in the same factory, so either is a good choice. I love TI's upright strings, but I hate their electric strings.

Try D'Addario Chrome Flats. They have more tension then TI's. They are smooth but not grippy.
