GHD Boomers

TYPO! GHD=GHS

Anyone else use them? They dont seem to be very popular around here. I kinda like them but they seem to go dead very fast, is it just my set or do other people have this problem? I'm considering switching to d'dario for my next set.

I love em. I don't know that I'd say they "go dead" fast, I'd be more inclined to say that they "mello quickly". They don't sound like stainless rounds by any means, but they are still brighter than flats. I guess it depends on the tone that gets you off.

I don't use them. They sound good, and they seem to last a good long while. But, they take a long time to settle into tune for me. And it's not the way I string up, as I only have this problem with GHS Boomers (and Lakland's nickle strings, and the stock strings on the earliest G&L, all of which are/were GHS Boomers). I can restring with DRs, D'Addarios, Elixers, Dean Markely, and other GHS strings (e.g. Super Steels, Brite Flats, Pressurewound, and Precision Flats), stretch the strings a bit, let the bass sit for a day without being played, stretch and tune again, and the strings will stay in tune enough to play a gig. But not with GHS Boomers.

And it happens with the guitar Boomers too.

I use them on my five string, very nice B. Haven't noticed them dying quickly, as I like kinda dead strings.

I am using GHD Bass Boomers Flea series, which are very gd, vary well from blunt sound to twangy popping.

Though i do wonder what imput Flea would have had in dictating the sound, or whether he just put his name to strings that's sound he admires/desires.

anyone know?

I,ve been using them for years without any of the problems stated above, they are reasonably priced and sound fine no matter what style you are playing.

I believe that the Flea sig's use a stainless steel E string. The other three are std Boomers.

I find Boomers always work, so they've been my "default" string for years. I wouldn't say they're always my favorite on every bass. I prefer flats or, oddly enough, Blue Steels on my Precision, and I slightly prefer Fender Super Bass on my Jazz basses. But Boomers are great on the J's, and so far my faves on my DiPinto Belvedere, G&L SB-2, and G&L L-1500. I think they last long enough, have "just right" tension, and provide solid basic tone. I have none of the tuning problems mentioned above.

I used Boomers extensively back in the day (like about 1976-1981), and liked them just fine. They were my go-to roundwounds for all the classic rock I used to play back then on my Fender Precision (D'Addario Half-Rounds for roots music like blues and reggae).

Liked 'em just fine - no problems. Since then, I've most recently played the Boomer 52s, which I like even more...

I just switched to Boomers in the last month. I was using Rickenbacker strings on my Rics but bought a used 4003 that came with GHS Boomers. Loved them. Broke a Ric string on one of my other Rics so switched that bass to Boomers too. They seem bright enough for my tastes without screechy bright and they do have a big sound IMO.

I've had the same set of Boomers on my main bass for the last six years or so. I like them because they sound round and bassy, not clanky and trebly.

I really love boomers, it's mostly all I buy. My next purchase will be bulk strings, going to try that out. I can find boomers for $19, and they satisfy me. I do wish they didn't go dead after 2 weeks.

I love the tone but I kill em really quick. But I'm known as "the string killer" anyway. I've been using D' addario lately and just put a set of Prosteels on ( known as a VERY bright string, right?) .... 15 minutes later they were starting to go dead. 45 minutes and they were toast.

I've used Boomers on stage and killed em half way through a 45 minutes set... sounded just like a nice old set of flats!

any help is welcome

I never dug the boomers...they're a tad too dark for me...

but it's been about 12 years since I used them, and my ears, tastes, and style has changed...

right now I'm lookin' at the Fender Stainless as a "next love"...but I'll keep the D'Add XL's around for awhile too

I never found anything wrong with Boomers, but they did not fit the styles of music I play (folk and other"roots" music) so I switched to other GHS strings (Pressurewounds and Precision Flats) and Fender 7250 series.
