GHS boomers 95's to DR hi-beams 105's some questions...other suggestions?

well, I have a 1988 rickenbacker, mostly original, and it has the original pickups from what I can tell.

I did a hipshot upgrade to the tuners, maybe the bridge next! on to the strings...

I got to play a 2006 rose colored ric (that was CHRONICLE's) and a 2008 jetglo (that was BEYONDHAIRY's) with DR HI BEAMS at the aug 09 NYC gtg...thanks beyondhairy and the chronicle~!

you guys have nice basses

so, I finally got my own DR's

some questions....

are there other types of HI BEAMS from DR? these seem very rough, and not that bright...more of a deep piano sound.....

should I have got nickel or another type? what is the other type of string?

hmmmm--- I dont even know what ones I have now that I am thinking about it!

this is my main complaint ... I cant slide as well with the DR's as with the GHS...not just slide, but move around the fingerboard with that "dragging" feeling on my fingers.

so, I guess I should find out what type of strings I had.. nickel or whatever.

and find out what I just bought. help?

I might just sell these off, and get another manufacture, or just a lighter set of DR hi beams.... these 105's are hurting my left hand ad forearm muscles a little, but I am trying to work thru it.

any one else have experience with these manufactures? please share!

95 to 105 is a pretty large change in gauge. My experience with high beams was that they are very bright, but a heavier gauge will usually sound less bright. As far as the dragging, I never played a steel roundwound that didn't feel like that,

yeah, might have made too big a jump there....

a steel roundwound....you mean stainless steel? how do I know if the DR HI-beams are stainless, and not nickle

I couldnt see any indicator on the box, and I threw the box away.....is it written anywhere?

as far as DR strings --- I just found this!----LoRiders have a hex core whereas HiBeams have a round core. LoRiders can be nickel or stainless steel and HiBeams are strictly stainless.

Sunbeams are the nickel plated version of hi-beams. Lo-Riders are alot stiffer because of the core. The dragging feeling you are experiencing is the typical feel of new stainless rounds. Try sunbeams if you like
the tension of the highbeams.

thanks!

my next step might be medium/light sunbeams, if they make those...hehehe

I am also going to compare these back and forth with the ghs boomers....but I might get tired of changing them!

maybe I shoudl record some bass lines and listen to see the difference....any of you people do that?

any other suggestions? thanks so far

I've never actually tried nickel plated DR's but Im currently loving GHS boomers. I remember using them years ago and not really liking them but for some reason they go great on my G&L. Probably just because of my change in taste and technique. It really depends on what sound your going for. As far as the Sunbeams, they are available in the same guages as the other DRs. You will most likely have to get them through mail order, I havent seem any stores stock them.
