GHS Boomers twangy G string

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm in love with boomers and use them exclusively on my J bass. At first they are too bright for me but mellow to a perfect medium in time.....except the G.

I'm looking for a G that is bassier sounding and mellow, could someone reccomend a string for my bass

Thank you.

Are you looking for a string to replace the G, or a whole other string set?

According to GHS, the next mellow'est strings in their product line is Sub-Zero Boomers, then Coated Boomers, and then Pressurewound Flats.

IMHO the ones that are really going to have the most difference and more phatness / mellow tone are the Pressurewound's (which are not really Flats they just call them Flats for some reason)

Good point!

Which boomers set are you using OP? (there are only 12 different 4 string sets)

Actually, with JO flat wounds I often use a "medium" set for the D & G and a "medium light" set for the E & A.

I believe they are mediums.

Ninety five percent sure but they've been on a year so I don't really remember.

Great idea on the heavier G string. I should have thought of that.

Mediums would be a .045... They have a .050 and .055 available.

Never seen GHS sold as singles, but it should be possible.

The medium light set is a set with D and G in medium and E and A in a lighter gauge. That balance works great on a lot of basses.

Are you sure it's the string? Might be a good idea to check your pickup height and string balance. Adjusting them can make al the difference.

Still working on adding the other available GHS singles to the site.

But it is pretty cool they make singles available for every string they make!

All the Boomers are listed though as Contact Core, Progressives, and Super Steels.

Hmmm, interesting, I've been unhappy with my G string too, not bassy enough. I use the Pressurewounds, but the heaviest G they have is .044. What do you think of going to say a .050 or higher for the G string but from a different type of string, like a ground wound or something. I want a heavier string but would it stick out soundwise compared to the other strings?
