GHS/Dunlop string tension/stiffness

Sign in to disble this ad
Well guys, here is my actual situation:

I have in my bass a set of GHS Bass Boomers 40-95, but they are too stiff to me, specially the E string. I want less stiff strings so I can achieve more easily a clanky sound like this

I've heard that Dunlop strings are less stiff than most strings available in the market, and since I can purchase them in a store nearly I thought that I should give them a try.
So, is a set of stainless steel 40-100 Dunlop strings less stiff than the strings I'm using now?

I know that there is a thread about this playing style in the technique forum but I think that this is the best place to post this question.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, Dunlops are much lower tension.

Maybe much lower than GHS.

They feel about the same tension as EB Regular Slinky's, to me. Slightly less tension than D'Addario strings of the same gauge.

Craig S, are you saying that EB Regular Slinky strings have the same tension as Dunlops?

Dunlop strings are hard to get here so I might try some Extra Slinky. What are your thoughts about them?

I just swapped out my Boomers, 45-105, for the equivalent Dunlop nickel plated before last Saturday's gig. Much lower tension, but what suprised me most was how bright they were, especially with a pick. Sure, the old strings were... old, but nickel isin't supposed to be this bright. Loved 'em.

Yes. Very close, I think. They definitely don't sound the same. I used Slinky's for a good while on my SR5 and they sound "right" on it. I think the Dunlop's tame the Ray a bit. The midrange is different; a little bit scooped, maybe. Still punchy, though.
