I like a good thumping unbrite sound and have read good things about GHS on P-basses, but I now have a J.C. and havn't read anything about GHS on the JC bass...

Jack himself uses Blue Steels, so I tried them on my JC when I first got it and really liked them (much to my surprise, I might add). Since then I've switched to the nickel (NPS) Blue Steels and like them much better: softer and rounder both in tone and feel.

I suspect you won't have any trouble getting a "good thumping unbrite sound" out of the JC with any set of strings, simply by cutting the highs out with the tone control and tweaking your amp as necessary. However, IMO doing this (or, at least, overdoing it) is contrary to the genius of the bass and pickup designs, which are intended to produce (especially) rich, complex mids that are highly sensitive to subtle nuances in technique. You just won't be getting the most out of the bass in terms of what it is designed to do and uniquely has to offer. If you just want thump, string a P-bass with a set of Fender or LaBella flats and you'll have the perfect bass!

Interesting. What is the tension like on those? As much as I like the NPS strings on it now, I'm eager at some point to try a set of flats on the JC. However, I don't want anything with very high tension, both as a matter of personal preference and because I'm concerned about pulling out the bridge. I've been thinking about TIs, but never considered the GHS. I'd like to hear more about them.

I use Chromes on mine--Medium, I think (45-100?). The tension feels just about perfect to me--not quite like TI Flats and not nearly as high a tension that Fender flats seem to have.

GHS PRESSUREWOUNDS.
Use them on my JC, best of both worlds.

Did you take a chance and try a set ?
I've ordered some but they're not here yet. Will post when I've tried them for awhile.
For now I'm using whatever crap they came with from Korea...

No, it'll be a while before I'm ready to swap strings, and I think the first experiment will be a set of TI flats that I just took off my P-bass. I'll look forward to your report for future reference.

I put a set on today and like some things, like the thump and older sound but miss some of the clear articulate sounds...so not really sure at this point.
I also don't gig or jam much anymore so it may be awhile before I really put them to the test.
I have used Thomstik on my old P bass and really liked them, even though they are a lighter gauge...so may eventually try a set of those...

Which GHS set are you using? I have a DiPinto Belvedere, which is similar to the J.C., and I've found that GHS Boomers are a great match. They provide some clarity and "zing" up high if desired, but have a nice low end that will "thud" appropriately. And they have good string-to-string balance, very unlike the one set of Dean Markley NPS I tried. (Love the Blue Steels on my P-bass though.) When I want rounds on the DiPinto, I doubt I'll use anything but Boomers, apart from possibly DiPinto strings if they're still available. Those were great too. They'd probably work on the J.C.

I tied the Blue Steels and took them off after 5 mins, totally
not my sound.

Likw Nedmundo I use GHS Boomers, .45-.105. I haven't had
any bridge issues at all. If you shine a light inside you will
note that the area where the bridge is mounted is actually
solid, so I wouldn't worry about the bridge pulling out from tension.

I also subbed Boomers for the stock Lakland flats the Lakland
HB comes with. Totally different beast, now it roars.

I guess I am just not a flats guy.

I have GHS Pressurewound strings on Mu Jack Casady and it sounds great . Brite but much smoother feel than roundwounds.
