Question GHS Precision flats vs. Chromes (tension question)

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a set of 45-100 D'addario Chromes on my P-bass right now and I'm wondering if there's anyone who can tell me what the tension of the 45-105 GHS Precision flats are like (relative to the chromes that is).. as I'm trying them next.

Tighter, loose-er, around the same as the chromes?

Thanks!

I used GHS Precision's for some time. I'm afraid I'm not sure of the gauge, but they weren't very high tension, for flats that is, if that's any help at all

They are around the same. The 105 chromes are definitely higher tension, but the lights are similar to the precision flats.

They are very close with the GHS' being slightly slinkier..............and even though you didn't ask, the Precision flats sound and feel better IMO, much warmer than the Chromes.

I have tries both, I found the chromes to be less stiff and better sounding. The GHS had no character, wouldn't intonate and sounded really cheap. I have yet to try any GHS product that I liked. Those flats were probably the last time I try anything from them.

Thanks for all the replies, guys!

How would you compare the GHS 105 to the Chromes 100 E-string, though? I'm guessing it's probably close, but my hope is that it's not too slinky!

I'm pretty happy with the price, and if they sound closer to a 'classic' flat sound I think I'll be impressed.

So far there's been one person to think the GHS's were tighter than the Chromes gauge.. anyone else care to chip in?

The tensions for those two sets are pretty similar -- certainly not different enough to worry about. Tonally they are quite different, though. GHS flats have that classic thumpy/buttery flat tone right out of the package, and Chromes/EBs are much brighter and high-mid focused. The guy who hated the GHS flats is probably looking for a really bright string, which the GHS is not. My favorite flats are TIs (I've finally come to terms with the low tension), GHS Precisions, and La Bellas. I don't care for Chrome/EBs.
