Hi guys, I'm planning to put either D'Addario Chromes 45-100 or GHS Precision flats 45-105 on my MIM Jazz standard..

i just want to know whether they're safe on the mexican neck?

Um... I think the P.C. term would be unregistered domestic worker or something of that nature.

That was bad.

I use the GHS precision flats on my stingray 5 and love the feel and the sound. The set I have is the light 4 string set (45-95) and the regular low B. However, I am noticing the G seems to disappear. The D was also much brighter than the B, E, and A. I broke my E string last night and had to switch to rounds (and reminded me how much I hate playing rounds) and I don't think the G was disappearing, so I may be looking at something else now. But, the same thing happened with TI's, so maybe it's the stingray.

I can't speak for the GHS, but according to what I see on the D'Addario website, the total tension of the Chromes Flats 45-100 (ECB81) is actually slightly less than their standard EXL165 Nickel Rounds (45-105) - 179.80 lbs. and 182.80 lbs. respectively.

So, I can't see why the Chromes could possibly be "unsafe".

(By the way, I use D'A Chromes 40-100)

Sure they're safe ... you may have to adjust your truss rod a few times the first week or so to offset the extra tension but the GHS will break in and, IMO, feel great to play.

i see... they're safe on the mexicans then.. how often do you have to adjust the truss rod? i mean i'm living in a tropical country so weather changes often..

my tech before suggested to use only light gauges..

Yes, very safe. You need to periodically apply some tung oil to your fretboard. That will help with the tropical conditions and keep your board in good working order.

yes i do apply oil or fretboard conditioner often..
the only thing i'm worried about is how it affects the neck.. especially when climate changes.. the neck moves as well right?

They won't affect the neck any differently than light gauge roundwounds. How often you adjust the neck just depends on your particular bass. No way to determine that.

I use the GHS light gauge set... sounds good, very comfortable...the bass had regular slinkies before this...the flats required no adjustment.

I live where the humidity can get high in the summer. As with any bass, keep your eye on the bass and make adjustments on the neck tension when necessary.

It averages between 85-95 degrees in June with July's and August's highs often between 99-104 degrees. Not as high as the desert southwest but much more humid (I've been in the four Corners area when it was 118 dgrees). The humidity here during that time is stifling, to the point it's hard to breathe. As David Letterman used to say, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity".
The winters here are drier, even to the point that I have to have a humidfier to keep my acoustic intruments from drying and cracking.

Fancy seeing you here.

OT,I just switched from mystery strings to d'addario chromes on my fenderbird, and I tweaked the truss rod ever so slightly and it was fine. Gotta love the flats.
