For fretless players they are kind to your fingerboards and for fretteds they are nice on your frets. They more or less fit the area between rounds and flats in tone. They last quite a while as well. They are very smooth to the touch and have little fingernoise.
Next time get them here: GHS Electric Bass 4 String Pressurewound 34" Scale, .044 - .106, M7200 |

I've been eyeing them, but when I ordered my Contact Cores, they didn't have a high C string in stock at the time so I waited. Hoping to try them out soon. |

No.
Compressors are a bit darker, a little tighter. (tort)
And feel a little smoother than The GHS set.
I like them both.
Compressors for my P-Bass.
GHS for my Jazz Bass. |

GHS Pressurewound M7200
.044 .062 .084 .106
Nickel/Iron Rollerwound
from GHS:
"Made with round nickel/iron alloy cover wire slightly flattened in the winding process. Bright-sounding, great feeling strings for any playing style."
Love the black silk too!

GHS for my Jazz Bass. | This is correct. And also note that certain "compressor" strings (in particular those that came from Alembic on my Fretless) were NOT rolled flat at all! They were simply round wounds that were apparently wound under tension, hence giving the name. They were nice round wound strings, but were not smooth as I expected and chewed the ebony so I took them off.
Another smooth but bright string is GHS "brite flats" which are ground on the outside and are flatwound smooth on the outside but yet much brighter. They are not quite as bright as pressure wounds but I use the ground wounds on my fretless basses because while pressure wounds are kind to a fretless the ground wounds do not chew fingerboards AT ALL. But you do sacrifice some brightness. |

I have a passive fretless J-bass. I had some La Bellas on there previously and I liked them but thought I should try some others for comparison purpose. I play in a jazz band, doing old standards and a little funk. Looking to be able to go back and forth between more upright-ish sound and more cutting, funky Jaco-ish type of tone. Not looking to duplicate any particular tone, jsut looking for some non-zingy tones.
I think I can use my filter knobs on my amp to EQ the zing away, but since I didn't have to do that with the La Bellas, I am thinking it makes sense to look around some more to see if there are other strings that would sound possibly better. I like the conceptual idea of compressed strings, seem a nice solution to someone looking to get a close approximation to the round sound on a fretless jazz without the wear and tear. I am not going to epoxy the fretboard.
Thanks guys! |

As a result, the Smith Compressors and GHS Pressurewounds are really pretty similar, but with the subtle differences listed above.
I've been using the Smiths on my fretless Ray for a while as I like the slightly knocked-off treble as compared to PWs. Really nice sound and feel. I think they'd pair up really nicely with a Jazz bass, although I haven't tried that yet. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
