Godin A-4 strings

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a Godin A-4 and have a set of La Bella 760N .060-.070-.097-.115 (the package says "Will fit Rob Allen bass") that I want to put on it. When I try the string keeps pulling the tuning peg out. Will these strings work on my A-4 ? The Godin site says to use .045,.065,.080,.100 strings, are the La Bella's too big ? I've heard of others using the La Bella's on Godin's.

Do you maybe mean that it's pulling the bridge pins out?

I had a couple similar problems on a set of 5 string labella flats with my A5.

A little piece of wood by the groove in the brinde pin flaked off (from the bigger string) but eventually, I managed to get the strings secured without anything but string tension to wedge them in. Seemed like more trouble than the last time I did it though.

Also, I don't know if ou had a problem with the string width at the tuning peg, but I had to trim the string down to fit it into the pegs.

Godin gave me a recomendation for a specific labella set in that guage when I emailed them... its somewhere in a thread i started if you really want to search.

In the end I just left 'em until it was time to try and find something better... too much hassel for me. Good luck

I had that problem on my Godin acoustic-electric (the model prior to the A4) I solved it by getting bigger bridge pins. I don't know if the A4 already has bigger bridge pins or not. My problem wasn't with Labella flats but with Fender nylon tapewound flats.

I'd look carefully at what's going on there and try to figure out why it's pulling the bridge pins out. I think on mine it was caused by the extreme stiffness of the Fender flats, They just wouldn't bend easily. Also very hard to wind on to the tuning peg. Just bad strings all around. I gave up on them as they didn't sound very good.

I pre-bend the string about an inch from the ball and install the ball bit and push down the peg. I then keep a lot of pressure on the peg as I tune the string up.

The gauge mentioned does sound very high. I use TI Acousticores on my A4 fretless and love them.
