Going back to Roundwounds... wich ones?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm wanting to go back to roundwounds, because for sonic reasons I need the overtones (never thought i'd write that). Anyways, I´m a bit on the ignorant side now when it comes to Rounds. Would coated strings be a nice transition? I need something that lasts. I need some Round advice (in Stainless Steel).

So far, I'm torn between
- Elixir (pricey!)
- DR Neons
- DR Sunbeams
- Rotosound 66 (although I'm afraid I could hate the barbwire-ish feel some claim they have)

So feel free to recommend. Some options might not be available this far south of the world, tho.

Thanks!

Rotosound swing 66 would be nice however theyre gonna be quite a change from what youve been useing (flats) feel wise. For smoother flats with closer to rotosound tonal balance Id suggest dr sunbeams.

Dr neons are my fave strings, used to be rotosound swing 66. Little more treble top then swing66 and little better low bass articulation and impact. They do last at least one and half times as long as rotosounds to so their initial cost while higher does mean lower yearly total string cost. Giving neons a twice as long rating would be reasonable to I think. But you'll diff get a good 1 and half times loinger if not twice as long.

Couple basses Ive had came with elixers, I did not like their sound nor feel. But some do like them. They diff feel and sound diff from neons.

Id suggest trying sunbeams first. Then if you find you want little more treble top, the neons.

I swear by DR Fat Beams. They took the Hi Beams and made them even better.

I finally tried the Roto 66 last week, scared off for years by what I'd read about the feel and the fret wear. I absolutely love them so far!

I still think GHS Pressurewounds is a great transition string overall and I've tried all of the in-between strings by now. But I'm subscribing to this this thread.

I used DR Hi Beamas a good 4 years ago, and although I absolutely loved their tone and feel, they felt somewhat "not just perfect" in terms of string to string balance (wich is the one big trait my LaBella FS760 have that I don't want to loose). I'm leaning towards DR neons (or another coated DR, maybe?)

D' Addario EXL170 Nickel-- they feel and sound very good, cheap and last a long time to boot. (my top choice considering everything). I have tried many strings DR (Sunbeams lose tone fast), Hi beams, Fat beams, Black B. (all good) R. Cocco (good) Sadowsky (good), Rotosound (too rough feeling and too much string noise) Lakland (good, but hard to find in all gauges) Dean Markley Blue Steel (good sounding, but lose tone and feel worn fast) other strings etc. etc. etc...

Sunbeams are nickels, ss counterparts are Hi Beams. Which are excellent strings IMO!

I really like DR DDTs, they have really good string-to-string and note-to-note balance, and the fundamentals are very clear. Not as bright as some other strings, but that's part of the whole "balance" thing.

dr neons r the same as dr extra lifes except the neons glow. they r easier on ur fingers than most strings and rotosound make nexus strings as well. they r brighter than dr extralifes but sound the same other than that

never even thought that Rotosound made coated... but they might prove very hard to find on this parts. DR Extra lifes could be it! (altho I don't dislike glowing strings per se, It is not quite the look I'm fond of).

Check out the DR Silver Stars then! They are the same as all the other DR Extra Lifes but without the color!

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm pretty sure DR strings it is, now that I heard Black Beauties also features the coveted K3 coating...

I just went back to rounds, and bought two sets of Rotosound RN66LD 45-105 nickel-plated stainless rounds $25 at GC; bought on a whim), and I'm really enjoying them on my P. Nice and bright, with the warmth of nickel still in there.
