Anything with a nickel wrap would be better than steel. My P with Hi-Beams is just complete highs and no balls.

My recommendations are:

Sadowsky Nickel (black label)
Fender 7250ML's <-- Personal favorite at this moment

Additional recommendations before popping off your current strings:
Raise Action up enough to create extra tension and break angle over the bridge saddles
Tension is your friend for punch.
play behind the pickup but in front of the bridge

I was about to say Nickels with Fender 7250MLs being my favorites on a MIM 50's P. And Sadowsky Black Nickels are not bad. I did not get on with DA XLs. GHS Boomers were so so. After I go thru a set of Sadowsky Blue Nickels I think I will go back to the 7250s unless the Blues blow me away.

As for steel strings that last you have DR, Labella, and Sadowsky. But in my limited experience, steels kinda take away from the P character (maybe the punch?).
