I'm looking for a set of strings that aren't too expensive, feel good (supple but not floppy) and sound good in pop-style music.
I don't know how much string brands have to do with this, but I'd like strings that aren't weak in the upper register. You should still be able to hear the bass even if it's playing past the 12th fret.

I'm partial to DR's myself- steels for some things and nickel for others. Just depends on how bright you like things, and also nickels tend to have more oomph in the midrange IMO/IME.

| | | | I used Roto swing for 30 years until about 6 months ago when I was talked into trying DR hibeams. I will not go back to any other string and I would have died for Rotos before. When I put them on I never had to do intonation (and they are a lighter string) or stretch. I tuned them up and never had to tune for weeks until a cold snap put my bass out. |

I listened to Ed Friedland's review of some various DR strings, you can view/listen here: http://www.bassemporium.com/newslett...ewsletter.html
So now it sounds like I either want the DR Sunbeams, Roto 66s, or Dunlops. Both the Dunlops and the Sunbeams claim to be lower tension, which to me is a good thing. Lower tension allows for higher action and thicker gauge while remaining easily playable. Thicker gauge means more body and higher action means less fret noise. These are good things
Now I'd like to hear how the Dunlops and Rotos sound compared to the Sunbeams.

Just great all around strings. Using them for about 25 years, I've never found a bad string.

Unless you feel you already have all the make/model suggestions you could need, I suggest you give a try to GHS Boomer B52s. IMO, they're a real sleeper - but with great, snappy, bright, punchy pop tone.

MM | My goal is to eliminate options. I want to narrow it down to one string. I want to know exactly what brand, what type and what gauge of string to use and just get that. I don't have the time and money to waste testing dozens of different sets.
