Good string gauge to drop tune to D standard?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been finding more and more lately that DGCF tuning has been more to my liking for both playing and writing and I'm just wondering what string gauge would work out best for this tuning? I've found that .45-.100's just aren't doing it, the strings feel way too loose. Would .50-.105's do the job any better?

I use Dunlop Nickel Plated Steel 45-105. I have a hipshot drop D tuner on my bass and have no problems with loose strings. My stings are still pretty new and have a tad bit of twang in them yet. Still trying to play the heck out of my bass so they get mellower (if that really happens).

I use a ESP LTD B404SM 4 banger.

Look at a .110 to .115 on bottom - assuming you like .100 for E

I'm using a custom gauge set of ProSteels (50 / 70 / 90 / 110) for DGCF on my SR4. A 110 is good, but I would have gotten a 115 if D'Add made one.

Ok, thanks for the answers so far guys. So far I'm thinking of looking at a set of GHS Boomers (50/70/95/115) since I'm happy with a set of GHS strings I recently got.
Does anyone make flatwounds around this gauge for a reasonable price?

I used the GHS .50-.110 set for DGCF. They were very tension heavy, even when tuned down to D standard, but man, what a sound! Since you like GHS strings you'll probably like them.

Actually, what would be a good string gauge for going down a further half step to C# tuning? I imagine a set of .50-.115 would be ideal for something like this?

Thanks knuckle, I've been trying to decide that when I get my new SX bass if I wanna have it set up for D standard tuning, C# tuning or going down further to A# with a set of rotosound dz strings, but I'm just looking for all the info for what would work best.
But thanks to those who have helped me out.

If you chase the A# look for between a .140 and a .150.

Exploration keeps the mind sharp - have at 'er man!
