Good strings for G-C-G-C-F tuning?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking into tuning one of my 5-strings G-C-G-C-F and am having trouble finding strings to do this. Does anyone know of any 7-string (or 6, but I doubt that) sets with a Low F# (.165?)? I just want something thicker than a B so it actually has tension.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to get a 5-string set then buy the low string individually, that would get expensive.
The Conklin strings are the only ones I've found so far, $56 for the 5 strings, then $24 for the low one is too much for one set of strings.
Thanks

your best bet for the G would be a warwick dark lord string i reckon .175 unfortunatly i dont think you can buy them in singles you could use the set liek this

.175G
.135C
.105G
.85G
seperate .45 or somthing for your F. i dont know whether the 105 (reg E) would be too tight as a G. depends how you like your action

A 35" scale would work much better than a 34" scale for that. Once in a while I drop tuned the B on my 5er (34" scale) to A with a .125, and it was somewhat floppy. Dropping the B/E strings to G/C is two whole notes each - that will require lengthing they're scale [intonation] - I hope you have the room. You'll have to carve out the nut too. My 4 banger's (34" scale) are drop tuned to CGCF using .045 / .065 / .085 / .105 rounds with hex cores. I may try a .110 for my C next time, but no larger than that -I like lower tension. I don't know what to tell you on dropping the B to G as far as gauge goes - I've never done that. Good Luck - let us know how it turns out.

Ah, the Warwick Dark Lord strings had not occurred to me. I just looked (kind of absently, but there was probably almost 20 minutes of good searching in there) for half an hour. Does anyone know where I can buy those strings?

Your better bet is the .165 you can get from Conklin.

They are SIT power steels if memory serves so you ought to be able to piece a set together reasonably (beyond the .165 of course).

The 'wick strings have been going for $50 a set.

I've used both the Conklin .165 and the Warwick .175, and gauge aside, the Conklin seems to be the better built string. I enjoy the tension of the Warwick better, but the instability of the note makes me wish I could get away with the Conklin.

If you have a decent touch (which I do not) go for the Conklin .165. I built a set around that Conklin .165 using Ken Smith Stainless singles and they were a great match.

I think it would be best to get the following:

heavy 4 string set (.050-.110 etc) for the high GCF
light B string (.120 ish) for the low C
F# string (.165) for the low G

That's probably what I would do. Of course the B string isn't totally necessary but an E tuned down to C is too floppy for my tastes at least.

Or you could order all of your strings as singles, that might give you more options for gauges.
