Growl, this may seem strange.

Alright, I've got a 44-02 strung up with precision flats right now. I really like how my low notes sound, I get this fat growly sound (through a 700rbii and Mesa PH112). When I play my higher notes though I don't get that growl and it's more of a lifeless plinking type sound, hard to describe. I keep thinking if I switch back to rounds my higher notes will get their growl back, but I don't want my lower notes to thin out at all. Can anyone help me, or am I just being insane?

Throw your old roundwound D & G back on and see how you like it.

Les Claypool plays with two A-strings and two G-strings on one of his 4-string basses.

You don't have to conform. I vaguely remember somebody else commenting on this same thing.

I think that growl I'm hearing is from my amp now that I think of it. Do flats have more output than rounds? Maybe the lower strings are louder and are causing more GK growl to happen.

Another note, if I take the strings off, will they still be usable to put back on, or will I need a new set of flats?

Your flats will still be usable after a nuclear holocaust.

Right on, didn't know if winding them around the string post would make them useless after removal

My thoughts exactly. Thicker gauge could help, but probably only a little. Maybe turn down the input gain and turn up the boost.

Your action is too low. Straighten the neck a bit and raise the bridge saddles.
