| Growling fretless?

Hey fellow TB'ers. I just got a new fretless which came with some flatwound strings. While the round, bass-y, thumping tone it produces is nice, I just don't think it's my style.
I was thinking about using some roundwounds, but I've heard that they can put some wear on the neck. So before I switch to roundwounds, is there a brand that gives a nice meaty growl to a fretless (or as close as I can get?). THanks.
