Just bought a Warwick Corvette Double Buck 5er and the dealer offered a free choice of strings.
When I was an active player about 8 years ago I always played on EBS Northern Light strings with the setup 40,60,80,100,125.
At that time I was also a member of the EBS VIP-club. Sounds cool but it was just all about trying new EBS stuff and give consumer feedback to EBS. I got the offer to try a thicker gauge with the setup 45,65,85,105,128. It was no mock-ups, it was market product.
I changed to the thicker ones and I got absolutely disappointed, for two reasons. Firstly, the strings were very stiff and didn't "give" at all. Secondly, the sound just died during playing.
I gave my feedback to EBS and surprisingly the CEO of EBS called me back asked me to return the strings. He said it might have been a manufacturing problem which causes "Dead Strings". I returned the strings and he sent back a set of my original gauge as compensation. They were fine.
Now to my questions:
1. Is "Dead Strings" known as a manufacturing failure term to you?
2. Does thicker gauges die faster compared to thinner ones?
3. In general, what is the difference in sound- and playing experience between thicker and thinner gauges.
