Are there any disadvantages playability wise, in switching to a heavier guage string? thanks

Assuming you've gotten used to a certain gauge, switching to a larger could possibly slow down your fingers for a bit as you get used to digging a little harder for the sound you want. You'll most likely get used to it pretty quick though. Might as well experiment and figure out which gauge is most comfortable to you before you settle.

Not really. It's a preference thing, after all is said and done. Higher gauged strings use less tension overall to acheive pitch, but it's not like it's a night and day difference. Not to me, anyway.

So, just find a set that sounds good to you.
