Guages for an Ibanez SR305?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently got an Ibanez SR305 and am loving it, but as it is my first 5 string, I'm not sure what to do vis a vis string tensions. The standard strings that came with it seem a little loose to me and rattle on the B, E and A strings. It may be more of a case of raising the action slightly, but I thought that I may as well ask about the strings here as a back up. So, what are people using on there 305s?

Thanks in advance

Most 5 string sets suffer the loosest string being the B, and second loosest being the E.

Yes you can compensate in setup and playing technique - this is how most 5 string players do it.

You can also come by a balanced tension string set which goes a long way toward evening out volume output from string to string, technique from string to string, and evening out the physical stresses on your bass.

I sell balanced tension string sets, as do other string manufacturers. I can suggest a reasonably balanced set so that you can put a balanced set together with singles.

There is the standard method (raised action on the low side, lightening technique on the low side, lowering the pickups on the low side, etc.) as well that leaves you with more string set choices. Tried and true and works like a champ.

Well-balanced sets would look like;

.142 .106 .080 .058 .043

.136 .100 .076 .055 .040

I totally thought of the wrong type of gauges when I clicked on this thread.

Was thinking of like an Autometer Voltmeter cut into the body...

and I concur with the .136 .100 .076 .055 .040
