Guitar string on a short scale?

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a Epiphone EB-0 that i'm going to string ADGC to make it a tenor bass. Now cuz its a short scale, i'm having trouble finding a C string. Plus i've currently got a nice set of Pyramid golds on it that i don't particularly feel like getting rid of (because they were fuggin expensive). Pyramid don't make any short scale c strings (suprise suprise), but they do make a line of flatwound guitar strings. Does anyone think i'd have any problems using one of the guitar strings? Guitars are 26" scale right? So 4.5" shouldn't be too much more to ask out of the string... right?

It would be quite a lot depending on where the windings ended.

Based on my previous experiences, I suspect that loading that EB-0 with a really skinny string like a guitar string would sound terrible. Probably very thin and tinny. And the EB-0 seems like an odd choice, as it's not especially oriented toward mids and high frequencies.

Also, that EB-0 is 30" scale and my guess is there's no way a 26' guitar string will fit it. You're not going to have enough material to wrap around the tuner.

I'd just pick up a light gauge set of bass strings and have a go.

I use regular guitar strings on my EBO to make it a piccolo bass, they work fine.

D'Addario makes string sets for both tenor and piccolo basses that you may want to check out.
