Question Half round and Ground wound strings on a Stingray?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anybody here tried half rounds or ground wounds on a 'Ray?

I'm curious to see what people think of them. I've read a couple threads on here on the subject but I don't think there has been a recent one pop up in awhile besides last year maybe.

I love the flats I'm running right now, but I'm curious how half or ground would sound on it.

I read the thread regarding the "glass half full/empty" issue regarding half/grounds. I tend to be an optimist so I hope that they can get a nice in between sound without too much lacking in either category.

Also, anyone slapped on half or grounds? I like the tone I get slapping these flats, but the tension throws me off (I know, I'm a weenie).

Oh, here is the "glass half full/empty thread"

Half rounds... Do they do what they're supposed to do?

A. My first StingRay (ca. 1979) shipped with GHS Brite-Flats (GHS's version of moddified rounds). I used them for a ggod while on that bass and really liked them.

B. Abe Laboriel used GHS Brite-Flats on his basses, including his pre-EB Sabre. That combination was featured on his movie work, and all the stuff he did for the TV show "CHiPs".

C. Joel DiBartolo used the same strings on oth his 'Ray and his Cutlass (a pre- EB 'Ray with a graphite neck) on the old "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson & Doc Severenson.

it's a matter of personal preference. I didn't like them but I know bass players who do.

I've been using them on my fretless 'Ray for years; Ken Smith's most recently, but I've tried GHS Brite Flats as well as others.

BassLife, what do you not like about them?

Alan Smith, what do you think of them? Tone sound okay? Pretty versatile? I'd ask if you slap them but I figure you probably don't do a whole lot of that on your fretless Ray lol

50% of my playing is slapping and they aren't made for that. doesn't sound as good as steel roundwounds

I used the D'Addario half round chromes on my G&L 5 string, which is very similar to your Stingray. This was the only half round at my local music store and I wanted to try them out. These generally have the lowest user rating of half rounds by internet retailers. I really liked them and they did slap very well. This particular set I thought sounds very 'woody' almost hollow, with great punch. I did not think they were especially articulate in the higher registers, which is something I need for soloing. Have you thought about trying Alembic strings? These are wound with an oval wrap. I haven't tried them yet. I am yet in search of the perfect string for me and it seems to be a long expensive process.
