Half Rounds on a 5 string MK Dragonfly

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to put some half rounds on my Acoustic 5... I was always under the impression that using Electric Bass strings on a acoustic would put too much tension on the neck & bridge and damage the guitar. Even more so with a 5 string. Is that correct?

The only half rounds I found were these D'Addarios but it seems like they are for electrics.. Anybody use these on an acoustic?

FWIW, I put fender Flats (electric bass strings) on my Fender Kingman acoustic and it not only sounded better but pretty much put an end to the fret buzz I was getting on the A and G strings from the 10th fret up. I should think since your guitar is built for 5 strings it should be fine. I do know that the flats I put on were of higher tension.

FWIW, I put halfrounds on one of my basses and took them off within a week. They hurt my hands. They are rough on the fingers.

Just thought I'd mention that the Fender Flats, straight out flats, are very smooth - almost slick smooth.

I am thinking half rounds because I am putting them on a fretless acoustic.. and I figured the half rounds would be a decent compromise on tone vs fingerboard wear..

That is surprising... do you normally use flats? I usually use roundwounds on my electric.

D'Addario Half Rounds now use a Pure Nickel outer wrap that is shaved down to be a half round. They are pretty smooth. Ken Smiths feel very smooth as well...

I say give it a shot if that is what is tempting you...

Little pic:
