Half rounds on a Music Man

Sign in to disble this ad
I would love to get a Music Man Stingray, but my budget is more of a Music Man SUB bass, which I currently have a line on.
I like using half rounds. I play in a party/wedding band so we do a lot of variety from standards to funk to jazz, pop, Motown etc. I like that the half rounds give me a smoother sound than a round wound does. I use them on my Peavy Grind BXP and it gives me just enough pop when I need it. Not as much as perhaps I would like sometimes but certainly I can dial back on standards.

Does anyone have any experience with how they might perform on a Music Man bass, which seems to cry out for rounds wounds?

Thanks for the thoughts.

It all depends what you want from your sound. The "classic" Stingray sound is rounds, I suppose, but many here have flats on theirs and love it.

I had GHS Brite Flats on my Stingray for a while. It sounded very nice, and I still have them on my Stingray fretless. Warm and round.

I can't think of anything half-rounds wouldn't work well with, really.

I have to agree. Sure, they aren't amazing strings, they don't exactly scream tone! but they are very versatile and I like them well enough!

I can only imagine a MusicMan + Half Rounds = awesomeness. Just a little grind, some thump and some zing, but not too much.

I just got a Sterling and it was too bright for me with the EB rounds. Put on flats and I like it much better-a warm vintage sound. If you like half-rounds use them, the bass will understand.

Stingrays have a ton of mid range by their nature and I found that flats gave me a nice thump and good fundamental that I had been missing in rounds. I really liked what flats brought to the Stingray.

P.S. I am not much of a slapper. Only an occasional pop or slap for emphasis, so loosing the slap-ability of rounds didn't bother me.

Well said! Thanks to all for the answers. They helped a lot. First things first. New rig set up and then by summer next, a Stingray!
