Hard time with chromes

Sign in to disble this ad
I love the sound of broken in chromes. It really doesn't get much better for me.

However, even after pro setup, the tuning on the E is terrible.

Actually, i may hit an open E and it be in tune, hit an open E again and it be pretty flat, then hit an open E again and it be sharp.

Then, intonation wise, A fretted low G always comes out sharp.

Now let's throw a pick in the mix. The tuning different between a pick and fingerstyle is almost a half step sharp with the pick.

It drives me crazy. I have tried 3-4 different packs over the past year and I always end up taking them off. I do not have this problem with any other string set. And it only happens on the E.

Do I need to give it more time to settle?

I'd say you have nothing to lose by living w/the problem for a bit and seeing if it goes away. A few tricks I've learned w/E-strings. When you cut them, leave around "a fistfull" of excess string. When you're winding them onto the peg, try not to twist them. Make sure your first wrap is at the top of the peg and then wind downward. Once you've achieved pitch, grab gently around the 12th fret and lightly tug a few times and then retune; repeat 2 or 3 times until the pitch of the open string stabilizes. If you already know and do all of this, then sorry, return to the top of this post .

What gauge? Big E strings are more likely to have this problem IME. I agree that you may need to just play it until it settles a bit.
