Has anybody combined Rounds and Flats..??

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry for the somewhat weird post but really curious about this. I threw a set of EB Group III flats on my new Ray and really dig em outside of the typical flat/boomy low end and loss of the growl . I decided to switch my lower (E and A) back to the standard Slinkies and left the D and G the flats and I think Im in love. The highs have a little more substance and smooth as a babies butt...

So am I crazy.... or am I risking neck issues...the tension seems to be the same...intonation very close.

I've been wanting to try something like this myself. Let me know if you find success with it.

T Bone Wolk used a P bass that mixed rounds and flats, I believe. Round D and G, flat E and A.

Here it is:

That was actually what I thought would sound good too. I think round D and G would give you a bright tone on the treble side and the flat E and A would give you a nice bassy low end...

It sounds like a pretty good idea, but unless you're buying seperate strings would be expensive. Buying a flat pack and round pack only to throw four of the strings away sounds like the cost would build up pretty fast...

The flats could last you years, so just change the rounds half.

I did that for a while before switching to all flats, for the same reason. The D and G strings sounded fuller that way. With almost every set of rounds I used the D and G strings always sounded weak. Obviously they would be weaker than the E and A, but they were too thin sounding in comparison (as if you went from the E and A on a 6 string guitar and then went right to the B and E for the next two).

I've kinda done that with just a flatwound G. Actually worked pretty good.

I would think the change in tension would make the set very unbalanced and difficult to play. You would almost need to try different brands to get a balanced feeling set. You would need a low tension flat and medium tension round I would think.
