Has anyone ever bought a 5-string set for their 4 string...

...and used the THICKEST 4? (i.e a B string for the E, an E string for the A...blah blah...) - would that be possible without breaking them?

Search for "BEAG". There are many, many threads on the matter.

You can do it, you just end up tuning like the bottom four strings of a fiver.

I would NOT advise using the BEAG strings and actually tuning them EADG. That would pretty pretty hard on the neck.

Also, be careful that you don't crack the nut with the thicker strings. I did this once.

Yep...used to do this a lot with a previous band. Really helps when you're used to a 4 banger and need more lower range.

And for tunings like dropped C (CGCF) you can get a 5 string set, toss out the E string, and use the BADG strings. Makes it easier for the tuning IMHO.
