Have strings changed or is it my ears?

I have recently began playing again (after a 20 year break) and it sounds to me the round wounds are much more clicky sounding (with a pick which I ocassionally use) than they used to be. I ended up buying some flat wounds to get my G&L L-2000 sounding good. WOW does it sound good! The crazy thing is 20+ years ago I tried flats and thought they were the worst sounding things ever. I can't believe I bought some, and I really can't believe I love ethe sound. The flats sound much better than I remember and the rounds brassy or something. Is it me or the strings, maybe both, or have I lost my mind? I think I'm a flat man now and wonder about how they will sound on a P bass.

Yeah, it seems like the tone trend has changed to more of an up front instrument, instead of the low rumble in the background, and manufacturers have adjusted.

It's a lot of things. Including the fact that an L2000 is a pretty punchy bass.
