When changing to new strings it is very very common that you will need to adjust the action of your bass. That includes adjustments of the truss rod, bridge saddles, and pickup height. It's not that there's anything wrong with the strings, it's just a normal part of putting on a different kind of strings than were on there before.

I have raised the action to the highest possible and the problem persists. like i say it is to do with the head, as the string comes out onto the neck it thickens and so touches the fret its because the string is thin going onto the head but thickens midway down the first fret so it is not held high enough away from the fret

sounds like your truss rod needs adjusting, or better yet, get a pro setup and your bass will play 100x better

If I'm reading your post correctly, you have a string that is tapered at the end, and the tapered end of the string is resting in the nut slot?

Sounds like you have a string made for a short scale bass or something....

take it to a shop and get it professionally set up. if you dont know how to properly set up your bass, itll be worth the money and save you the future headache.

+1

Check what scale your strings are and make sure they match your bass's scale. The strings should be full size (no taper) where they pass through the nut.
