Question Heavey strings on Jazz Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Did you try to use heavey strings on a Jazz bass?
I have a set of heavey string(RotoSound,50-120?), and
Want to install it on my Fender MIM standard Jazz to
get more growl.
the question is:
1.if the heavey strings do harm to the neck?
2.how much growl will the heavey string give?

share your experiences please! thank you!

I doubt it will do harm to your neck, but you may have to adjust the TR more often.

I dont know about more growl, I doubt it. It will give you a deeper sound and you can get very low action with heavy strings. The downside is that they are harder on your right hand.

I use Fender 9050Ms which are quite heavy. I also want to try Labella Jamersons... which are supposed to be heavy too.

I want to try the Jamersons. I used to use heavy strings on my guitar (.014 sometimes .015 for the high e). I'm not doing that again, cause I play blues and like to bend. I do want to try some heavier than my current bass strings though, just on one bass though. How are Jamersons on a fretless? Can anyone describe the sound of them to me?

I know that Jamersons did use heavey string on his fender.
I just want to find out something special with heavey strings.
I am not sure if heavey strings on jazz can give us heavey music. Let's try it.

FWIW - that looks like a light B set to me. There will be huge tension on that E if you choose to tune it there.

That gauge is better for a C above B than the E IMO - if it were me I wouldn't tune it higher than D.

one of my buddies put strings on his old p-bass with a .110 low E. it put so much tension on the truss rod that the wood strip on the back of the neck (where the truss rod was installed i think) popped out. he got that bass for like 20$ though

FWIW > the Fender STB basses come from the factory with 8250's ... which use a .110TW E string ...

I use the heavy Rotosounds, .110 I think they are. very heavy on the old left hand, you get some fabulous thick tone though. I am however considering switching to lighter gauge Rotosounds because my fingers are now creaking and cracking and even locking up...
