It's me again asking about tuning!

My band just purchased 7-string guitars and we're going to be going to drop G tuning and I was wondering what strings would be good.

I have a 34" scale SR506 for mah bass btw.

Look for as thick a string as possible.

Y'all play teh br00t4Lz?

D'addario makes a .145 string in both NPS and steel. You could try that. Although Meshuggah tune even lower for their newer material and their bassist just mimics the guitars, not an octave lower.

Whoa whoa whoa. Are you saying two whole steps below the B-string on a 5-string? Another +1 to circlekstrings.com

you may want to consider having your bass professionally set up when making such a change. nut, bridge, and possibly neck adjustments may be necessary.

no one needs to go that low. just like no one needs a fast car, or needs to drink beer and blow things up on the 4th of july, but its fun. God bless America!

wrong forum

to the OP, what kind of amp are you using? i used to tune to drop G and had some issues with reproducing that low of a note. i was using a carvin R1000 and an SWR megoliath 810. definitely a powerful rig. i also used a BBE sonic maximizer which helped, but the low G was still not as strong as i liked. i ended up ditching the Low G, and Tuning my 5er to CGCFC. much more useful for my situation YMMV

ps i was using a .135 for the G which didnt help

k i'm all for heavy downtuned stuff... but drop G is retarded, unless you're like... meshuggah or something, don't do it. B is low enough. In Drop G, you will not play notes, just a bunch of thudding, farting sounds.

ps and meshuggah's bassist tunes up, cause he realized tuning down that low is retarded.

While I don't at all condone the use of drop G (in fact, I always advice against tuning that low), it is the OP's choice, and what his band feels will be best musically. At one point, people thought that anything below standard tuning is unnecessary (actually, people still do).

That being said, it is also kind of an obvious question. The lower you tune, the thickest strings are more advised.

Don't buy new strings, get a church organ. You know, one of those *BIG* MFers, then you can hit low G all day. Plus if you get a church organ, you can kill small animals for real with your SPL, waaaaay more br00t4L than tuning your bass to drop G.

Just get one of these and tell your guitarists they're not tuning low enough.
