Help with D'Addarios please...

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm just putting a set of D'Addario Prosteels (long scale) on my 35" scale Warwick, and I've noticed the E and B string taper at the tuner end begins whilst it is still on the fretboard (not past the nut).

The site I bought these off says that this length should be enough for 36" scale so I was wondering whether it was ok to install the strings like this, or whether I need to get longer strings for my E and B?

What do you think?

With D'addarios, use the actual length of the string from nut to ball end, rather than scale of the bass.

See here:

Sounds like you may need an extra long set.

I use their medium scale strings on a short-scale bass as it has a string-through body.

The long/extra-long scale mistake sounds to be the correct one. I'd drop D'addario an e-mail about the issue - their customer service is wonderful, and I have no doubt they'll do right by you.

If you work at DR as you claim, this post is a violation of the CUP.
You should read up on that.

Anyway - I appreciate D'addario (and others) making separate standard long scale and super long scale strings. I don't like buying strings for my top loading bridges and finding a 38" winding length so part of the full winding diameter wraps around the post. Especially on the E and A. That can cause breakage and other problems.

But D'addario really ought to put that answer from their FAQ in a more prominent place on their website. I have their print catalog and it's kind of stuck in an out of the way place too. It won't stop store clerks from giving people bad advice but it would help people who look beforehand.

Thanks but no thanks - I've gone D'Addario because the DR Hi Beams I ware using were very disappointing to me. I really like the metallic "zing" that you find on 035 gauge Rotosound and D'Addario strings, and the 040 Hi Beam did not reproduce that.

Which D'Addario strings are you talking about that have a metallic "zing"?

You'll probably run into intonation issues with it like that. I had a set of Elixr longs and the B had the same issue. Luckily, I was able to order a single XL B string from JustStrings. Good luck on your D'Addarios. I used to use RotoSounds on my T-40, Half Rounds on a J I had and loved them.
