Pick up a copy of Marvin Gaye's groundbreaking record "What's Going On." You'll hear possibly the best James Jamerson (IMHO) and some great Bob Babbitt tracks that embrase the dead-string concept.

Bass notes that ring on-and-on forever with mucho sustain has its place, and I love that sound for some stuff, and bright strings and clear harmonics are cool for other musical styles for sure. But think about a bass sound that punches hard and then dies out after a short bit, and how it can lock-in with the bass drum. So now you've got great low-end punch with a bit of bass drum flavor to it, and when you marry that sound to a great drummer's kick drum, you've got the ingredients for some bass-ass R & B going on all over the place.

Anyone got that BBQ recepie handy...??

Peace...
+1

I'm listening to a lot of that kind of stuff recently. Don't have the Marvin Gaye CD, I'll check it out ... thanks.

Andy

Uhhh, why not roll off the tone control if passive, and roll off the treble control if active?

This seems to work for some. It does not work for me. If I roll off all the treble, I find that the tone that results is lacking, new strings or not.

I was flummoxed when I saw that. She had me rofl-ing.

I'm still in the clanging, squeaking, endless sustain phase of the round wound 7250ML on my squier jazz bass, had the guitar about 5 weeks now. I would like some of that deader, motown kind of sound. If my computer hadn't been so sub-par in video performance lately (don't know why), the video for the ghs pressurewound was pretty convincing.

put the lemon oil only on the part over the neck? Will wiping the fingerboard/strings down smear the oil to the rest of the string?

Chicken. Definitely chicken. Organic free-range for your hippie sandwich planks, tofu will not work. KFC for the average Fender.
