Help identify my strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys
I need your help.
Bought a 2nd. hand 5 string jazz bass with a great set of strings on it, wana buy a new set of strings but can't identify them and can't get in contact with the guy I bought the bass from.
I done a bit of research on them, and can conclude following:

Size: 045. 065. 085. 105. 1.30
Nickel
Hexcore center
Lay lenght of the wrap wire is 10 wrap pr. 1/4" on the E string
(Rotosound 66 and DR Low Riders are 12)
Direction of wrap is from bridge to head
(Rotosound is actually the opposite)
The wrap wire is spun extremely tight say comparred to
DR Low Riders, see photo with DR string on top.
There's no silk thread at bridge end but
Red silk thread at free end (head)
Silk thread starts at around 37" from bridge end of string.

Above should rule out following:
DR: Don't use silk threading
Rotosound: Direction of wrap and silk treading both ends
D'Addario: No individual color coding of string ends

I have from this theoretical view identified these strings as a possibility
Ernie Ball EB2850 Super Long Scale Bass 5-String 045/130
I'm just uncertain if they use threading at the free end of their strings. I'm not sure they do.

Help me guys

I don't think they would be Ernie balls, like DR, they don't use any silk threading.

Hi again
Could it be a set of
GHS Bass Boomers model 5MDYB?
They are nickel coated steel in the
same size as mentioned ?

Dean Markley also uses silver silk threading on some sets...

Hi Cozmic
Yes off course, but I'm not sure that it will tell us alot.
I know that the guy I bought it from buys his strings here
www.saitenmarkt.com
which I do myself by the way, so I contacted them yesterday by mail.
Not sure I'll ever get a reply but we'll see.
Nice bass you have by the way "Esh Sovereign 5 fretless"
I've been reading "Gitarre und Bass" for almost 15 years.

I was a regular reader of G&B from 1990 until 2008. Then I quit and from then I only read bass magazines. There was just too little bass topics in the mag by then. Although I miss Dirk Groll and his very special review style...

That Esh is a hidden treasure. It was unusable, when I bought it and Rüdiger from Bassline changed it into a really great fretless bass. New fingerboard, ebony saddle, ETS bridge, B-Band piezo, NOLL preamp and some tweaks to the neck angle and it is a winner. It didn´t cost that much, around 400€ plus the 450€ I bought it for and it is a very special instrument.

Due to it´s history I call it Frankenbass or "Restebass".

quick update
just in case others can beenfit from it,
yes they were GHS Boomers 5MDYB.
Surprised how smooth they feel comparred
to others, and almost as "broken in" from the
minute you put them on.
Great to find a product you really like and
for once not at the top end of the price range.
