Question Help me identify these strings please...

Sign in to disble this ad
Bought a bass about a year ago....had some GREAT strings on it....previous owner said they were DR High Beams so when the mystery set finally did dull down, I ordered some Hi Beams.

...but they are not high beams!

They actually have a transparent coating on them (duh should have noticed this earlier).

So...

- very bright harmonic sound (almost 'chorusy') but not harsh
- lowish tension
- last for *ages*
- transparent coating
- come in sets for 5 string basses.

Any ideas?

The Hi Beams are good -- but rougher, and not as lush and zingy in the high end.

TIA this should be fun? Can't be that many that fit the bill.

Could well be. If so I'm sold on them!

They are taper wound at the top on the heavier strings also.

They could be DR Bootzillas,or D'Addario EXP's.If the barrells are bronze color, they're most likely DR's.If all different colors,D'Addario EXP's. I tried both and went back to Elixers.

Barrels are all bronze.

Also, the strings themselves are a very 'white' steel color...the Hi Beams are slighty darker/bluier (as have been some other strings I've had).

Anyway to tell the difference between Elixir and Bootzillas?

Elixirs have a polymer on the surface of the string (a condom, if you will), and Bootzillas are just coated.

The DR Bootzilla set is fun.

98mtd, why do all your posts about DRs sound like ads? I can see you endorse them, but it's a bit strange to me anyway.

Yeah, I mean, even if I was getting free strings, I wouldn't be posting them like ads. They'd have to pay me to get that.

Green Apples paid me to do that one.

Feel it in the One Drop
And we'll still find time to rap
We're makin' the one stop,
The generation gap
Now feel this drumbeat
As it beats within,
Playin' a riddim,
Resisting against the system, ooh-wee!...go roll one.

If those strings are coated with no silk, they're Bootzillas.
