i figured the best way to go about getting a stainless steel set for my 6 is to buy singles from just strings site.

I need even tension and i want the tension to be high, so i know i need thicker strings.

How thick should i get for the B string? they have .145 and .135...i was looking at both...i think .145 might be too much...they both have a tapered core...can you guys give me specific gauges for the strings to make an even tension, high tension set....thank you!

Do you tune standard? I definitely recommend a .145 for a B, let me know if you tune standard and we can go from there.

Well it's tough to make a balanced high tension set with a .145 B. A .145 tuned to B sits somewhere around 37-38 lbs., which IMO is not quite high tension, but tight enough to get a nice sound out of and certainly not too floppy.

Here's what I came up with:

B - .145 - 37.5 lbs.
E - .105 - 37.3 lbs.
A - .080 - 40.5 lbs.
D - .055 - 37.6 lbs.
G - .045 - 41.9 lbs.
C - .032 - 41.9 lbs.

Not exactly high tension, but fairly well balanced. Those are calculated with D'Addario UW's, if you shop around for singles, you may be able to find something between a .040 and a .045 that would bring that G string down a couple of pounds and the same for the C string, for the sake of balance.

If you call Fodera in Brooklyn, NY, they'll be willing to build you a set of custom gauge stainless steel strings, and it wont cost you what you would expect to pay for a custom set. They did a custom 5 string set for me for under $50. I told them what gauges I wanted, what material I wanted and what scale length.

If you want, DR can make you a custom set for the same price as a standard 6-string set. PM me for more details.

Can we get a custom 5-string set for the same price as a standard 5-string set, too?

Do you make flatwound B strings with gauges larger than .125?
