Help me pick a set (new bass)

I have a new Essex p-bass that I need string suggestions for. I play in a rock setting, with a pick. I have Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounders (SPB-3s) ordered and I'm really after A Perfect Circle tone with this bass. After the SDs are in, and the bass gets a fresh setup, what strings should I put on it?

The SPB-3's are really bright, powerful PUPs. I use GHS Brite Flats on my bass with the Seymour Duncan and I think they work together perfectly. The strings moderate the brightness of the PUP and the PUP accentuates the brightness of the strings. Lots of low end thump, with a very nice bit of midrange bite. I tried roundwounds at first, and they were retched with the SPB-3. Really clangy and trebly. Ground rounds or flat wounds are the way to go IMHO.

With a P-bass, flats are always in style. I'm a Labella Deep Talkin' Flats fan, but they're NOT on the bright end...so choose accordingly.

Do flats sound good with a pick? I thought flats were more of a finger style string.

I use DR Black Beauties with my quarter pounders. They are very bright - how aggressive do you want? I'd say this combo is about a 7.5 out of 10. Very usable, but definitely on the brighter side with a bite.

Nah, picks sound good on flats. Carol Kaye on "Good Vibrations", for example.

I don't think they make a bass guitar string that you can't play with a pick, or your fingers. If you are using a pick, I would definitely go with flats. Unless you like uber brite and non bassy tone that is.

A great compromise would be a set of S.I.T. Power Flats. They are half-rounds and will give you a sound in between a flat and a round. They're fairly smooth to the touch and you get more definition in your tone than most flatwound strings. I've also heard that they last a long time.

Try DR strings, not as edgy as most new strings but last longer and have brighter tone. Great for that Adam Clayton tone, he's always used DR strings, slapped a pair on my P-Bass and they sounded a LOT like he sounds.

I play with a pick 99.9% of the time.

Pick + Flats = Awesome.

A lot of the early players played flats with a pick. Early Joe Osbourne recordings come to mind. It is an awesome combination and can get that nice P-bass grindy tone. Carol Kaye's playing on Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys immediately comes to mind.
