Help needed with 6 string set

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I'm looking for a 6 string set and wanted to see if I could get some help wading through what looks to be endless possibilities out there right now. I am by nature very non-acidic so I change my strings about once every 1 1/2 years yet play a decent amount. Thus my confusion when it's string buying time again. Plus, I'm about to track again, and need to freshen it up again.

The bass. . . I made it when I was in college. . . it's got a VERY solid bottom end on the low B. . . maybe too solid, and extremely live on the top end as well. . .(35" scale, purpleheart neck/ebony fretboard, neckthrough, thick and wide neck) but I've mellowed out my rig to even it out. It was an experiment to see how solid a B i could get, and it worked. i always thought I'd go back and shave down the neck a bit because the B could mellow out a bit, but never got around to it.

Another issue is, I need more tension. The 2 truss rods in the neck have never been tightened. I figured over time, the instrument would set in and I would need them, but 8 years of being strung up, and i still only barely have enough curve in the neck with no tension on the rods to set it up properly. In fact, the slow trend over the years unfortunately has been creep in the opposite direction. . . The neck is straightening out VERY slowly on its own.

I like steel strings w/ hex core. . . been happy with off the shelf Alembic and Smith sets in the past. . . tried DR high beams, and it was unusably blindingly bright on this bass. . . they had to come right off. . .and I tried a couple other sets in the past that were too short for the 35" scale. I don't like nickel wounds. . . they don't feel as responsive to me anyways (low action, light-ish touch fingerstyle player).

Please recommend me a set of steel strings and gauges for the next 2 years . I'm looking at Juststrings.com and the D'addario pro steels in super long are looking interesting. In the past I've only had .130 on that B. . . thinking about trying .135. I don't know if I need the taper core or not. I've never considered individual strings to piece together my own set so some guidance would be of great help to me.

Thanks!

OH. . sorry. . . I wanted to add the strings on there right now are Smith I believe, and someday, I'll get around to lacquering the cover plate

Also, I keep telling myself I didn't need the electronics or 3 of the strings. . . I swear the next bass (if this one ever breaks) is going to be a 3 string bass w/ no knobs. Just a single pick up and a jack. What the heck was I thinking?

Nice work man. Very nice. I can do some calculations for you as far as string tension, but my eyes are closing as I type this, so it won't be tonight, but the Pro Steels are a good way to go, especially since they're not too pricey. If it turns out you don't like 'em, no big loss.

Hello,

I'm about to put in an order. . . wanted to see if these look reasonable. I do standard tuning. All I did was take the Alembic set that I liked and added .005 to all the strings roughly. which should give me a bit more tension. Let me know if there are any mistakes in here.

Also, i wanted to verify that the super longs will work for 35" scale.

C .035
G .050
D .070
A .085
E .110
B .135

Should I adjust any up or down? The neck is assymetrical. . . thicker on the B that on the C side. . . if it makes any difference. Very stiff. Little more mass on the strings might help the tone a bit. Not that i dislike it.
