help with strings

Sign in to disble this ad
hey everyone, this is my first post on here. i've been playing for almost 2 years now. i play a 4 string spector and i love it.

i'm not very knowledgeable about strings. right now i play in a hardcore band where i am playing in drop d tuning. i've been using ernie ball regulars. they've been decent but i think they lose their tone too quickly. i've just stuck with them because they're cheap and they do a decent job. i want to find a pair of strings that are better though. the action on my bass is quite low, so going into drop d causes the string to rattle on the first few frets. the bass came with lighter strings which never rattled. i loved the light strings but my band mate told me to go heavier since we do play heavy music. i also definitley don't want to raise the action to accomodate heavier strings.

does anyone have any good string suggestions for hardcore? and do you think i can find a pair that will go with my setup well when i'm in drop d? i really don't know anything about strings so tell me anything.

Well, the first thing you need to know is how to tell your bandmate to **** off. You don't tell him what kind of strings he should use, do you? If you liked light strings, that's what you should be using.

Secondly, string preference is a very subjective thing. What I like and what you like could be completely different. That said, I think the Ernie Ball's were probably a good place to start, maybe try GHS Bass Boomers, DR's, and maybe D'addario's. Trying those out should give you some basis to develop your own personal preference. Once you figure out something you like about a certain string, you can base your next string purchse on that.

For example, lets say you try some nickel D'addario's, and then some stainless DR's. For the sake of argument, let's say you like the DR's better. Now you can pretty safely assume that you like stainless strings, and then you can base your future string purchases on that.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Pretty big wealth of knowledge on here, happy to help
