Hex Core to Firm-up the B-string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I only have experience with round core strings, and am about to get my first 5-string. In trying out various 5-strings I have finally experienced the "floppy B-string" problem with some basses.

Aren't hex core strings generally stiffer? If so, is it crazy to consider putting a hex core string for just the B-string to stiffen it up and then use round cores for the rest of them? If anything, keep everything else about the strings as much the same as possible (brand, metal, etc.)?

I'm a DR fan, so of course wonder about use of Low Riders and say HiBeams or FatBeams in this way.

I realize this may not make sense if string to string volume balance will simply not allow them to match up or they just sound so different, but hey, I was just wondering!

I would look at the terms...Hex Core, Taper Core, Exposed Core...

Since I moved to this kind of string, on the B, my basses are tight.

I love the MTD 135x's and the Smith 130's. I have a list of others if you need to explore...

Make sure that your tech sets up the bass with the taper core string(s) in place otherwise you will be hating life ... bad intonation

good luck ... you will not be sorry.
