Hex core /tapered strings = more overtones?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently swapped my DR hi beams for DR Long neck strings on my Marcus Miller 4. Interestingly, I got more overtones from my E and A strings, most of which I don't really like. Its like I have a chorus pedal 'on' most of the time! Through searching I read that excessive pickup height could lead to added overtones, but lowering my pickups didnt really help.

So my question is this:

Is it the Hex core or the tapered ends causing this? Or worse, are my ears decieving me?

3NotesAbar, you are gonna get a ton of differing opinions on this. In my experience, taperwound or exposed core strings are extremely difficult to intonate properly. I truly believe that they can't be intonated properly because of the different mass per unit length of the string. The further the taper from the bridges witness (contact) point the worse it becomes. DR Long Necks have a longer tapered portion than most and if you do a search you will see that these particular strings have annoyed a lot of people here. That said, DR designed these to be used on string through body bridges (which would explain the longer taper) but they really don't make that clear on the package.

Thanks for your response rsautrey, I'm gonna save fussing around by switching back to DR Hi Beams on my Marcus, and maybe move the set of strings around my other Fender-rish basses. Will update my findings here, and hopefully help somebody else in the process.
