I did a search but not much came up as far which kind will give you more growl.

I already know about how one is stiffer, etc. etc... thanks!

I don't think round vs. hex core (all else being equal) would have much effect on growl. If you like lower tension, go for round, if you like higher tension, go for hex.

thanks...btw, what happened to your clips of the Incubus song?! I loved hearing that thing! Believe it or not, it's one of the reasons I got a SS2.

Any more opinions on hex/roung growl are welcome.

I dunno. I'm sure I still have them somewhere. I have a few SSII clips handy here:

Hey, if you have an SSII then you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a good growl . If it weren't for the narrow string spacing (on the 5-string), I might have kept mine. It had one of the best, most unique recorded tones I've heard

For what it's worth, I used DR Hi-Beams on my SSII, while I had it. Still use Hi-Beams on my Ken Lawrence too. One of my favorite strings. Round-Core.

How do you get such a sweet sound out of that bass man? I can't figure it out...I think I read once you recorded these with a simple DI. Which is what confuses me.

Yep. Just through a DI, like all my recordings. I remember with the SSII, I would just turn the mid EQ on the bass down a tiny bit, and maybe the bass EQ up a bit. Aside from that, the strings play the biggest part I think. The DR Hi-Beams I had on it were probably about a year old at the time. So they had a more mellow, deep tone. The same set is on my Ken Lawrence now, about 2 years old and still going strong

Most people would say no major difference.

If you're looking for a slightly "rock"ier tone, go with hexes.
