Hey, can anyone answer this...?

I play a 34" scale 5 string, and I want to put flatwounds on it because I like the warmer tone. But I'm worried the B string might be too muddy. Any reason why I can't put a set of 4 string flatwounds on E, A, D, G strings, and leave the B string with a roundwound string?

I've heard that you are not supposed to mix string types, but I can't figure out why that would be a problem. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

You can do it. Why couldn't you? I don't think that's uncommon (I could be wrong, I never need more than a 4 banger) You be the judge of whether it sounds good or not.

Even if there is a difference in tension, I would think the other 4 strings would balance things out. I'd try the flat B just to see if you are mistaken with your assumption.
