High F?!

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently, I have my Ibanez SR506 strung EADGCF using a set of D'addario XL's for octaved 8-string bass. I used the octave D and G for the high C and F.

I like this setup, except for a couple things. The F is a .018 and is plain steel. While all the other strings have mellowed out, the F is still bright as can be, which is pretty nice, but it doesn't blend in at all.

Also, it's a little bit too loose for my taste, since I play mostly fingerstyle and slap. It sounds superb for slap, but I don't tend to pop anything that high anyways. I'm mainly strung up this way because I don't much like the low B, and wanted to try something different.

So, my question is, what gauge do you use for your high F on a 34" scale bass? I'm probably gonna order the F's as singles from www.juststrings.com, and I'm gonna go with some nickel wound.
