High-tension nickels?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I currently have Daddario nickel round wounds 45-105 on my Suhr jazz bass (the strings the bass comes with). They're too floppy for me. I'm thinking of going with DR Sunbeams instead (I've used and liked them in the past on other basses), but are there any other fairly high tension nickel roundwounds you'd recommend? The higher the tension the better as far as I'm concerned. Thanks.

As mentioned, DR Sunbeams immediately come to mind - that's probably the go-to set for those looking into a high-tension nickel string.

I've found that Fodera stainless strings are higher tension at a given gauge than other brands with the same gauge. I have never tried their nickel strings, but it may be worth exploring.

S.I.T strings are pretty tight

That's weird. I use the DR Sunbeams for their low tension, which is a result of the ROUND core. Hex-core's usually provide more tension. Maybe Rotosound nickels?

Yeah, I thought it was the Sunbeams (round core) that had the lower tension and the Low Riders (hex core) that have the higher tension.

I would stay away from DR all together if it's high tension you are after. The Lo-Riders are pretty light tension too, though a bit tighter than the Sunbeams.

Lo Riders indeed have the high tension- that's why I use them. The Elixir Nanowebs are a steel/nickel hybrid and are also quite tight.

I get the names mixed up all the time - the DR hex-cores are the ones that are stiffer than average.

What roundwounds do you find have a higher tension in the same gauge as the Lo Riders? I've tried most of the DR types, Fodera Diamonds, D'Addario, GHS, and a couple other brands, and the Lo Riders generally have a slightly higher tension than the other brands I've tried.

D'Addario IME are even stiffer than the Lo's...talking 45-65-80-100 gauge though. GHS seem stiffer than the Lo's too...talking 45-65-85-105. I have never tried Rotosound nickels but the steels are TENSE, imo.

Funny- I use the Lo Rider 30 45 65 85 105 set (along with an Elixir 130 B) and find them to have more tension than either of those brands.

Thanks

Thanks for all the responses. I find the Sunbeams a bit higher tension than the Daddarios, but the reason I asked is that I want something a bit higher tension than the Sunbeams. Since I generally really like DR strings, I think I'm going to try the DR Lo-rider nickels this time.
