high tension rounds for 5 string

Sign in to disble this ad
I play big flat wounds (a hybrid set of D'D chromes with the .50 G string) with a fair amount of resistance, kind of like an upright. OK I got a fore arm like Popeye...

I am getting back into slap work and have been trying out a bass for the specific task. But the problem I keep having is the basses I try have little resistance, and I dam near strangle the thing. So I guess the problem is the strings. i really like the Alembic tone, so could anyone recommend a high resistance 5 string set that will help me get that sound?

azureblue,

I can't really recommend a set of strings that give a certain tone. Tone relies on so many other factors, such as the bass itself, pickups, scale length, playing style, etc., much more so than the strings.

BUT, all thing being equal, I can say that heavier gauge strings will be under more tension, thus giving more resistance. The heavier the string, the lower the pitch thus, the more tension you'll need to put on the string to raise its pitch to the proper tuning. So, if you go with heavier strings, even if they don't give you the tone you're looking for, they will at least give you the resistance you're looking for.
