Higher String Tension

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all! I'm currently playing a Schector Stiletto Diamond Series six string bass. I really like my bass, but I feel like the string tension is way too loose for my needs. I think the neck is a 35" scale as well. I currently have RotoSound Swing Bass 66 strings on there (http://www.juststrings.com/rts-rs666ld.html). However, I'm not entirely certain if I have .30's or .35s. That being said, are there any recommendations for a higher tension string? I've heard that DR High Beams are great for this purpose.

Thanks!

String Tension

I love the tension of DR's. Ive only used them on 4 and 5 strings. 45 being the smallest, but the tension is nice. No slankiness.

DR Hi-beams are NOT going to give you higher tension, lower in fact. I play the DR's and Rotosounds on a fairly equal basis. DR LoRiders are going to be higher tension than the Hi-beams. There are a lot of threads on here about string tension, try a search...

Circle K Balanced 150 set. I love it.

I'm rocking a Circle K Balanced .142" set on my Matt Pulcinella Level 6, which is also a 35" scale 6er. Best strings ever for this bass!

For highest tension, use larger gauge strings and make sure the core is "hex" rather than "round". Sounds like you need some heavy gauge DR Lo-riders. Make sure you get the extra long scale since you have a 35".

Thanks a lot for your input everyone; I definitely appreciate it!

And mdogs, I did do a search on string tension through Talk Bass and I did some research online. I just wasn't sure if anyone had any particular experience with the RotoSounds OR my bass to see what worked for them. I didn't see anyone on TB that rocked the RotoSounds on their six or even used a Schecter Stiletto, :P

For that fact, a similar-gauge set with hex core construction will have a markedly "stiffer" feel than round core strings. DR offers both.
