Home made tapewound strings! Seriously!

So I have some time to burn this weekend and I thought I would try an experiment I have been thinking about. Picked up some teflon pipe thread tape at the hardware store and took an old set of DR Hi Beams I had saved. With patience I wrapped the teflon tape around every string in the set and put them on my Warwick Corvette 4(cause that was what the strings were cut for) and to my surprise it worked! The teflon tape stays in place and is very smooth. Alot of SS zing remained but it added a good bit of warmth. I don't know how they will hold up but it was alot of fun to see if it would work. OK, maybe I have too much time to burn!

$5 says it wears out within a few hours of playing. Cool idea though.

I don't think the top where I run my fingres over will but the part that touches the fret for sure. I also noticed that the usually springy and loose Hi Beams became a good deal more stiff. I might take them off and put them on an Ibanez beater that I turned into a fretless. Well, at any rate, they sounded better than the Fender Tapewounds that I bought although I thought the Fender tapes were pretty good and comfortable to play just not a real knock you off your feet sound. Solid for the price.
