i visited the local GC looking at necks(yes i would buy a bass or two and rob the neck),couldn't get past the feel of the roundwounds(at all!),maybe i just couldn't get past the crowd twanging their`strats' but,,i never WANTED to `plug in' any of them=the strings put me down
anyway(i know i'm whining ,found some great necks ,,,wish i could`try' with flatties!(darn it!)that's what i'm used to,when you say`flatwounds' the staff acts like you are from another planet(and i guess i am since i'm pushing 60=?),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hundred beutiful basses and not one with beutiful strings aboard(chromes)=WAH!
(ok i'm done )

anyway,,obviously my`case' is special ,,i tried to get out of the business last year but i HAVE WORK doing these old cars so i'm better off than many folks with work waiting to come in,,,i also have to wonder about tuning,,why even bother plugging in and playing if it hasn't been tuned(witch affects relief witch is what it's all about for me),yeah, ,i'm going to bed=all i need is a neck, and maybe some pickups,,new amp,,bus,,,airplane,,make it two (i hate flying i'll watch in my yacht as the gear goes to the next gig)
fondled 12 basses(all Fenderish) every one had a dif neck/frets/relief,,2 maybe 3`had it' the others didn't,the next guy would love ten of them

I guess all the basses had rounds as they are generally more popular. If they were to have half with rounds and half with flats, there would probably be a lot of basses which people (flatwound haters, of which I'm sure there are more of than round haters) wouldnt be able to try.
I love both rounds and flats, but I do find rounds a little more versatile, so that would be another reason, also as mentioned the cost of flats is huge compared to cheap rounds.

(ok i'm done ) | Ya just kinda gotta do what we all (flatwound guys) do. You just have to find a neck that feels good and go from there. Very few places I can think of will let a guy string up flats. Most stores have good return policies too.
You could always buy a bass or two and take them home. the string up some flats and give it a day or two. If you don't like it, put back the original strings and return said bass.
And as it relates to your comment about the staff looking at you, I agree. And it is not just music store staff, upon hearing I was going to go all flats, or half rounds, a friend of over 27 years looked at me like I just grew a 3rd ear on my forehead!

Used to be you had one choice for bass-- flat. Then came Rotosound. Now everyone loves rounds and most smaller stores stock only rounds or one set of Fender flats. That's why I buy my strings over the Internet.
