How Do I Tame a VERY Bright Replacement G String???

Sign in to disble this ad
My bass has a 2 year old set of flatwound LaBella 760FLs on it. Today I replaced the G String ( with a 760F - 045 )as it broke near the winding ( too many string experiments... it didnt break from playing, but from taking it on and off the instrument too many times).

Now I have a really bright sounding G string that does not fit well at all with the very worn in and wonderful sounding E, A and D strings.

How do I take all the brightness out of this new string?

I know some will say just play it like crazy, but the music I play doesnt even really use the G that much... but enough that I certainly need it.

What about some electrical tape to deaden the sound a bit?

Any other suggestions?

Ask someone to send you one of their old strings that they are changing out.

Used to keep flats on forever, now I'm addicted to stainless attack twang.

If I were to ever break a string, I would replace the entire set. I've never broken a string.

Maybe you could use a piece of foam under the G string until it settles in?

Aquaphor Healing Ointment....rub down the offending string with this stuff, repeat if necessary, and it will make the string sound old. I've only used it on a new set of LaBella Flats on a Hofner and a new set of Fender Flats, but it works.

All good suggestions. Thanks guys.

What I'm going to try is coat the string with hand moisturizer and leave it on overnite, then wipe off. Thats been suggested before on TB.

If that doesnt work well enough, I'll try a strip of black duct tape AND maybe some foam under the G string as well.

I'll also look into that Aquaphor ointment as well.

Eat a greasy pizza and then play your bass without washing your hands.

Why not take your old strings off and boil them to brighten them up a bit so they're closer in tone to the new string, instead of trying to do something to the new string itself?

Sounds like it would be the easier alternative though.

Try a wax hair product like Dax Wave and Groom. Get it warm so it can penetrate the windings. It might be a little messy but it won't be anything you can't clean up. Once you wipe all the excess away, there will be residue impregnated in the string which should simulate months of accumulated ick.
